On the banks of Belleville Lake, along High Street, in Downtown Belleville, lays Horizon Park.
In 1976, development of this park was initiated by a $2000 gift from the Women’s Study Club to convert what was once a vacant strip of land covered in weeds and brush, into a lakefront park. At that time, the land was cleared an ornamental trees, juniper and fire bushes were planted and benches were installed throughout the park.
During the 1980’s I remember attending 4th of July festivities at Horizon Park including the watching of fireworks which were shot off from the island across the lake.
The park remained pretty much unchanged from the original development for several decades. It has always been a fantastic location to take in a sunset or simply enjoy the sights and sounds of the lake.
In 2008, the park underwent a major overhaul as the land was once again cleared and landscaped. New sidewalks, lighting, pavilion, benches, picnic tables, restrooms and docks were added as well.
In 2015 additional improvements are expected, including the addition of a kayak launch.
Horizon Park is also home to the Belleville War Memorial.
Horizon Park is/has been home to many local events and activities, including The Taste of Belleville, Music Lakeside, Van Buren Public Schools Education Foundation Jingle Bell Run and more.
